Project: 700 Crosswalks is a pedestrian safety initiative led by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) District Six to improve crossings at signalized intersections throughout Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Jasper counties.
The initiative was established with a goal of improving approximately 700 crosswalks through new installations and upgrades that enhance accessibility and safety for people walking. Improvements include the installation of new pedestrian signals and pushbuttons, upgraded ADA-compliant curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalk markings, accessible pedestrian signal equipment, and other safety enhancements.
The project tracking displayed here reflects crosswalk improvements completed between 2019 and 2026 throughout the six-county region. The data includes projects completed by SCDOT as well as improvements delivered in coordination with local governments and partner agencies, providing a comprehensive picture of pedestrian safety investments across the region.
Together, these improvements help create safer, more accessible crossings and strengthen connections between neighborhoods, schools, parks, businesses, and other community destinations.
