Columbia, S.C. (August 7, 2026) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), in partnership with local counties, municipalities, and partner agencies celebrated the improvement of more than 700 crosswalks across the Lowcountry as part of a regional pedestrian safety initiative during a ribbon cutting ceremony in Charleston County.
Project: 700 Crosswalks reflects SCDOT's ongoing commitment to improving roadway safety through the new installations and upgrades designed to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians throughout Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Jasper counties.
Improvements completed from 2019-2026 include:
- High-visibility pavement markings
- Accessible & Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps
- Pedestrian crossing signals & timing enhancements
- Installation of modern pedestrian push buttons
Deputy Secretary for Engineering Rob Perry said, "We are here today because of our strong partnerships in the Lowcountry and I want to thank everyone that helped us make these improvements a reality. One death on our roadways is too many, and at SCDOT our number one priority is improving safety for every single person in our state. This is just one more example of the work we are doing to make safer roads a reality in South Carolina."
Common factors contributing to pedestrian-related crashes include low visibility during nighttime hours, improper roadway crossings, excessive speeds, and distracted driving.
Deputy Secretary Perry adds, "Through continued investments in safer pedestrian infrastructure, SCDOT and its local partners are working to reduce collisions, improve accessibility, and create safer communities for everyone who travels on South Carolina's roadways."
