Columbia, S.C. (September 23, 2026) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation opened new travel lanes on I-26 in both directions in Berkeley County on Wednesday, September 23.
Drivers will now have access to three lanes on I-26 westbound and eastbound between mile markers 187 and 194.
"The opening of these lanes marks a major milestone in the I-26 corridor widening project," said SCDOT Secretary Justin Powell. "It also brings us closer to the goal of expanding the entirety of I-26 between Charleston and Columbia."
SCDOT contractors will still be conducting single-lane closures as they finalize construction on the new lanes. The construction will be done before the end of October.
SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention when driving near the work zone.
