Columbia, S.C. (March 12, 2026) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation will close the John Smith Road overpass and road between US 278 and US 17 in Jasper County beginning on March 23, 2026 for the remainder of the year. During this closure, local traffic will be allowed to access portions of John Smith Road, but the road will be closed to through traffic. This closure will allow for a complete replacement of the bridge over I-95 as a part of the I-95 corridor improvements from the state line at Georgia and mile marker 8.
Drivers that use this road to cross I-95 will be able to use Exit 5 or Exit 8 to reach their destination. A marked detour route will be in place throughout the duration of the closure.
SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention to signs and crews when driving through the area.
