Columbia, S.C. (May 29, 2026) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) joined local and state officials and community members today for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Columbia Avenue Corridor Improvement Project in Chapin.
Key Improvements include the installation of divided medians to improve traffic safety and reduce conflict points, boulevard-style roadway improvements through downtown Chapin and two new roadway alignments designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The project also includes the addition of new sidewalks throughout the project corridor to improve connectivity and pedestrian safety.
The project is designed to improve traffic congestion, overall traffic flow and connectivity while supporting growth in the area.
Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "As with any project, SCDOT’s primary focus is providing safe and efficient travel in our state. On this project, we also worked carefully to preserve and enhance the unique character and charm that defines Chapin. Special design considerations have been incorporated to protect the historic oak tree in Columbia Avenue and maintain the small-town feel that is already a part of downtown Chapin.”
