Columbia, S.C. (May 21, 2026) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation announces the newly completed Old Vaucluse Road bridge over I-20 reopens to traffic in Aiken County today.
The bridge was closed to traffic in June 2025 after a non-fatal tanker collision on I-20. Governor McMaster signed an emergency order while securing $8 million in federal funding to expedite a replacement bridge.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, SCDOT crews and contractors worked through Father's Day weekend to repair the Interstate and clean debris to resume traffic flow in less than 36 hours.
Today, SCDOT hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project while marking a milestone for Aiken County.
Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "Today, we stand here together, seeing the results of those efforts – a lasting testament to that hard work.
I’m proud to say, the project remained on time and under budget. This new bridge reinforces our commitment to connecting communities, enhancing commuter safety, and ensuring reliable access for first responders and residents. Today is a symbol of positive progress for the future of Aiken County."
SCDOT would like to thank the public for its patience as crews worked to complete the project.
A recording of the ceremony will be available after the event on the SCDOT's YouTube channel.
