Columbia, S.C. (June 15, 2026) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation announces the newly completed Church Street (U.S. 29) bridge has reopened to traffic in Greenville today, following a comprehensive rehabilitation project.
The bridge, which was built in 1959, has undergone several improvements focused on enhancing the structure's long-term durability, safety and increasing accessibility for all users.
SCDOT Deputy Secretary for Engineering, Rob Perry says, "We thank the public for their patience throughout the closure. The improvements made here will serve Greenville well for decades to come."
The Church Street Bridge Project included bridge deck resurfacing work, upgrading pedestrian accommodations such as wider sidewalks, enhanced barriers and railings, new overhead lighting, and the construction of a new stairway connection to McBee Street.
According to the latest traffic data, 38,600 vehicles drive across the bridge daily.
Some final aesthetic enhancements to the bridge project are ongoing including landscaping and green space installation, and the addition of pedestrian lights in the bridge wall. The full project is scheduled for completion by the end of July.
SCDOT encourages drivers slow down, remain alert and pay attention to signs and crews when driving through the work zones.
