SCDOT to accelerate bridge replacement on Cannons Campground Road

Columbia, S.C. (February 14, 2025) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation will be accelerating the replacement of the bridge on Cannons Campground Road in Spartanburg County.

The bridge is currently closed to traffic for repairs and was scheduled to reopen this spring. The bridge was also scheduled for replacement in 2026 as part of a package of bridge replacement projects around the Upstate. However, additional damage to the substructure of the bridge was discovered by SCDOT during recent repair work, and SCDOT determined the current repair plans would not be sufficient to reopen the bridge to traffic.

Cannons Campground Road will remain closed during the accelerated bridge replacement project, which SCDOT expects will be complete within a year.

Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "We understand the strain that this closure has put on drivers in Spartanburg County. SCDOT is committed to completing this bridge so that it is safe and the final product will last for decades to come. For that reason, we will have to continue the closure and expedite a full replacement. We appreciate the patience of the public as we work to complete this project."
