SCDOT receives $8 million in federal funds for emergency replacement of Old Vaucluse Road bridge over I-20 in Aiken County

Columbia, S.C. (October 6, 2025) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation is announcing the award of $8 million in federal funding that was approved by the Federal Highway Administration for the emergency replacement of the Old Vaucluse bridge over I-20 in Aiken County. Crews have begun mobilizing and construction on the project is set to begin in November.

The emergency replacement is anticipated to be complete by Spring of 2026.

The Old Vaucluse Road bridge over I-20 was demolished in June after a collision and explosion caused the bridge to collapse. SCDOT was able to get the interstate reopened in less than 36 hours.

Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "Thank you to Secretary Duffy and the Trump administration for quickly approving the $8 million that will allow us to replace the Old Vaucluse Road bridge. I am proud of the work of our team at SCDOT and our contractors, who were able to rapidly mobilize and get the interstate reopened after the crash. This emergency replacement will be expedited by our crews so that we can continue to move people and goods safely through our great state."

SCDOT would like to thank the public for their support and patience as we work to replace this bridge.

SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention when driving near work zones.
