Columbia, S.C. (July 11, 2025) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation broke ground on the Ashley Phosphate Road Safety Improvements Project in North Charleston today.
The purpose of the project is to increase the safety of Ashley Phosphate from Rivers Avenue to Dorchester Road. This will include raised medians that reduce conflict points for drivers, high visibility crosswalks, new pavement markings and improved lighting.
This area was identified by SCDOT's Office of Traffic Safety and was studied by SCDOT, the City of North Charleston, Dorchester County, the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments, Charleston Moves and the Palmetto Cycling Association. This team identified ways in which the area can be improved.
Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "Our team at SCDOT is excited to get construction started on this project and make this area safer for all road users. With the help of our local partners, we hope to keep traffic moving smoothly and safely through this vital area of North Charleston."
The project is set to be complete next summer.
SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention to crews working in the area.
