SCDOT announces completion of Cannons Campground Road bridge replacement in Spartanburg County

Columbia, S.C. (December 22, 2025) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation has completed the bridge replacement and reopened Cannons Campground Road over Peters Creek in Spartanburg County. This project restores a vital link in the local transportation network following an extended closure due to structural concerns.

The original bridge was closed in May 2024 after a routine inspection determined it was unsafe for travel. Working closely with contractor partners and local stakeholders, SCDOT accelerated the replacement effort to deliver a stronger, safer, and long-lasting bridge. The new structure features modern design standards and enhanced durability to support continued travel for decades to come.

Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, “We are proud to complete this important project for the Spartanburg community. We understand the inconvenience this closure caused, and we appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we worked to deliver a safe, high-quality bridge that will support local travel and economic activity well into the future.”

The Cannons Campground Road bridge replacement demonstrates SCDOT’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and responsiveness in managing South Carolina’s highway infrastructure. Motorists are encouraged to drive with caution and observe posted speeds as traffic transitions to the new bridge.
