SCDOT announces last day to have Hurricane Helene debris piled for pickup

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is asking the public to have all debris properly placed in the right of way of state-maintained roads in areas impacted by Hurricane Helene by December 16, 2024. The graphic below provides instructions for properly placing storm debris.

SCDOT expects to have debris collected by the end of the year in most of the impacted areas. In the areas with the most significant storm damage and debris, SCDOT will continue collecting debris for the first several weeks of the New Year. This schedule is weather dependent and we will continue to communicate with residents in impacted areas.

Deputy Secretary for Engineering Rob Perry, P.E. said, “This is one of the largest debris missions in the history of our agency. We want to reassure folks that we are coming to help. We know we have properties in our hardest hit areas that are still waiting for the first pickup. We appreciate the patience of our community members as we work closely with our own maintenance forces and contract forces to clean up all of the mess that the storm left in our state.”

SCDOT asks the public to continue piling debris on the side of the road, safely out of the roadway. Moving all debris to the right of way by December 16 will allow crews to expedite the cleanup process.

Residents who are having trouble getting debris to the right of way due to limited road frontage or debris blocking the way are encouraged to call us directly at 855-467-2368.

Since work began in October, nearly 1,800,000 cubic yards of debris have been collected across the state. SCDOT asks that if you encounter crews, please slow down and give them room to work.

SCDOT will remove vegetative debris in the pickup zone away from hydrants, trees and utility poles.
