Columbia, S.C. (August 5, 2024) - Today SCDOT employees have continued to prepare for the potential weather impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.
Following preparation work over the weekend, today SCDOT has shifted into 24- hour operations in order to be prepared for storm response. In addition to preparing materials and staging equipment for quick response, maintenance crews have primarily focused on clearing drainage systems and clearing low-lying areas.
As of today there are approximately 2,300 SCDOT employees mobilized throughout the state. SCDOT continues to monitor the forecast with plans to deploy personnel to affected areas. Operations crews from the Upstate are already on location in the Lowcountry to facilitate a quick and safe response.
Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "SCDOT is prepared and ready to respond to the impacts of Tropical Storm Debby. This is a time when we have all hands of SCDOT engaged and ready to work together in the coming days, with employees from across the agency filling needs like damage assessment and call center staffing. This 'all hands' approach is part of our agency's culture and is an essential part of our storm response."
With large amounts of rainfall expected, SCDOT urges drivers to watch weather reports and plan routes before hitting the road. Drivers should never drive around barricades or through standing water. Real-time roadway information is available at 511sc.org. The public may reach SCDOT by calling 855-GO-SCDOT (855-467-2368).
