More overnight closures planned for bridge construction on I-126

Columbia, S.C. (March 6, 2024) – SCDOT is implementing the second of three closures of Interstate 126 Westbound, between Elmwood Avenue and Colonial Life Boulevard, for bridge construction on the Carolina Crossroads Project, Phase 1. The remaining closures of I-126 Westbound are tentatively scheduled as shown below will allow SCDOT to safely transport and set new bridge beams in their permanent locations.

  • From approximately 11 p.m. Thursday, March 7 to 2 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024
  • From approximately 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 to 2 a.m. on Thursday , March 14, 2024

Motorists on I-126 Westbound will be slowed down by law enforcement and then detoured to Colonial Life Blvd. From there motorists are advised to follow detour signs to Bush River Road and then back to I-126. Motorists may experience temporary slowdowns and stops in traffic while these closures take place, and are advised to use caution, plan accordingly, and follow posted instructions.

Also, when the girders are being set at approximately 12:30 a.m., traffic on I-126 Eastbound must be stopped momentarily by law enforcement as a precaution. This traffic pacing operation on I-126 Eastbound will last approximately 20 minutes. This may also temporarily slow down traffic on I-26 Eastbound.

The exact timing of these temporary closures is subject to change based on construction progress and weather conditions. Local law enforcement and transportation authorities will be onsite for traffic management during these operations to help provide for the safety of construction crews and the traveling public.
