Officials with SCDOT announced today that I-85 Business in Spartanburg County will be staged to begin to reopen to traffic on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Beginning at 7 a.m., SCDOT will begin removing the closure along I-85 business. Work will continue throughout the day and the road is expected to be fully reopen to traffic by the end of the day. SCDOT personnel and law enforcement will be in the area to facilitate the smooth reopening of the roadway.
Secretary of Transportation Christy A. Hall, P.E. said, "I am pleased to announce the successful completion of the improvements to this corridor. We recognize the critical role of our interstate system in moving goods and people, connecting South Carolina to the global economy. With the support of the General Assembly, SCDOT is making tremendous progress on improving the road and bridge network in our state and delivering on the promises we made."
The project started in 2021 and included the complete replacement of three bridges along the corridor in addition to pavement and safety improvements. As a part of the Agency's Strategic 10-Year plan, more than 100 miles of interstate improvements are underway since 2017 and more than 300 bridges are already being rehabilitated or replaced.
Drivers in the area are encouraged to slow down and stay alert for directional signs while traffic begins to flow again through this corridor.
