SCDOT crews implemented a temporary traffic shift along I-85 northbound between Gaffney and Blacksburg in order to complete necessary repair work to the pavement in that area.
Following a traffic shift over the weekend that moved the two northbound lanes of traffic into the future southbound travel lanes, it became apparent that there were areas of pavement that needed to be repaired and reinforced. The work will include adding additional layers to the road surface to strengthen it and accommodate the nearly 29,000 vehicles that travel the northbound corridor daily including approximately 7,250 trucks.
Secretary Christy A. Hall, P.E. said, "Safety is our number one priority and we are making immediate, expedited repairs to the pavement along this corridor. We appreciate the patience of drivers in the area while we work to complete this critical project."
The traffic shift returns traffic to the previous pattern – vehicles traveling northbound will return to the two outermost travel lanes. This travel pattern is the same as what was in place prior to the recent traffic shift. No changes to the exits are currently anticipated in relation to this repair work. This work is expected to continue through the end of the year.
Drivers in the area should slow down, pay attention to road signs and stay alert for crews along the roadways. Community members are encouraged to visit the website for project updates, including information about future traffic shifts.
