Columbia, S.C. (April 22, 2023)
– SCDOT announced today that the Interstate 77 Bridge Rehabilitation project is fully complete, with the second phase of the project finishing more than 30 hours ahead of schedule. I-77 near Columbia is open to traffic in both directions.
The project rehabilitated a total of 17 bridges on both sides of I-77 between the I-26 interchange (mile marker 0) to Bluff Road (mile marker 5).
“The successful completion of this project is just one example of the many critical bridge projects we are continuing to deliver across our state,” said Secretary of Transportation Christy A. Hall, P.E. “Our bridges connect people, they allow us to move freight without delay and they are vital in maintaining South Carolina’s booming economy. As an agency, we have planned strategically to repair and replace bridges before they reach the end of their useful life, and this project highlights that plan in action.”
Many of the 1,778 bridges on the Interstates and major Primary Routes are more than 60 years old and 63 percent are rapidly approaching the time for replacement or repair. SCDOT remains committed to identifying ways to make sure that these critical arteries remain open for the free flow of traffic.
Because of the volume of passenger and freight traffic, bridges along Interstate routes are a priority for the agency.
