First Phase of I-77 Bridge Rehabilitation Project Completed Early

I-77 near Columbia open to traffic in both directions

Columbia, S.C. (April 1, 2023) – SCDOT announced today that the first phase of the Interstate 77 Bridge Rehabilitation project is finished more than 24 hours ahead of schedule. I-77 near Columbia is open to traffic in both directions.


The project began on Friday, March 24 with the closure of I-77 northbound between I-26 and Bluff Road. This section of I-77 was originally scheduled to reopen overnight on Sunday, April 2. Nine of the northbound bridges were rehabilitated during the first phase of this project.


An additional eight bridges will be rehabilitated during the next and final phase of this project.  SCDOT will start the southbound portion of the I-77 Bridge Rehabilitation Project on Friday, April 14 at 9 p.m. with the closure of access to I-77 southbound from Bluff Road to I-26.


SCDOT is repairing and replacing hundreds of deficient bridges across South Carolina as part of the agency's Strategic 10-Year Plan to improve the state's roads and bridges.
