Construction Begins on New Westbound Bridge on U.S. Highway 76/378 (Garners Ferry Road)

The South Carolina Department of Transportation will begin construction to build a new, improved westbound bridge on U.S. Highway 76/378 (Garners Ferry Road) over the Wateree River at the Richland County/Sumter County line.

The westbound bridge is being replaced with a new 2,310 foot concrete bridge, designed to improve safety along the route. The eastbound bridge is not scheduled for replacement at this time, but will receive an upgraded surface as part of this project.

SCDOT is replacing hundreds of deficient bridges across South Carolina as part of the agency’s 10-year strategic plan to improve the state’s roads and bridges.

During the bridge replacement, traffic will be maintained in both directions during construction. To minimize the impact of construction, traffic will be shifted onto eastbound Garners Ferry Road. Drivers in the area are reminded to slow down, pay attention to road signs, and travel safely.

The traffic lane shift begins December 23, 2022, and the new westbound bridge is expected to be fully reopened to traffic by the end of August 2024.
