Charleston County, SCDOT Request Input on Recommended Preferred Alternative, Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement
CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (August 18, 2021) – Today, Charleston County Government and the South Carolina Department of Transportation launched public engagement activities for the Mark Clark Extension Project public hearing. These activities include both online and in-person opportunities for the public to engage. The public hearing webpage and Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) are available on the project website now and include all materials that will be available for viewing at the in-person public hearing events. The public is encouraged to review and make comments through October 15, 2021.
The purpose of the public hearing is to highlight the findings of the SEIS. Those findings include the recommended path for the roadway and potential impacts as well as asking for meaningful input from the public and stakeholders.
"The feedback we receive from the public will continue to mold the project moving forward. We are providing multiple opportunities for participation both in-person and virtually in order to maximize the input received during the public hearing," said SCDOT Project Manager, James "Jae" Mattox, III, P.E. "We hope citizens will take advantage of the multiple opportunities to review and comment on the project," said Charleston County Public Works Deputy Director, P.E. Richard Turner.

The Mark Clark Extension project proposes the last segment that would connect I-526 at Savannah Highway in West Ashley to Johns Island and tie into the James Island Expressway. The purpose of this project is to increase the capacity of the regional transportation system, improve safety, and enhance mobility to and from the West Ashley, Johns Island, and James Island areas of Charleston.
