The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled a media briefing Tuesday, May 4, 2021, concerning the upcoming Interstate 77 southbound bridge closure and repairs.
The briefing will begin at 2 p.m. at the I-77 Southbound Welcome Center in Fort Mill. It will be held outdoors on the south side of the Welcome Center in the natural area. In the event of rain, the briefing will be held in the Welcome Center lobby.
SCDOT Deputy Secretary for Engineering Leland Colvin is scheduled to review the scope of the project for the media including information on closures and detours.
The I-77 southbound bridge over the Catawba River in York County is scheduled to be closed for extensive, around-the-clock repairs beginning 9 p.m. May 6, 2021, and ending at 5 a.m. May 24, 2021, barring delays due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Traffic will be diverted to the northbound side of I-77 during the repair project.
Work is planned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to expedite the project as much as possible.
Built in the 1970s, the I-77 southbound bridge deck over the Catawba River has shown clear signs of deterioration and has required many repairs during the past decade, often taking several days and impacting traffic.
