Statewide Planning also coordinates with the Division of Intermodal and Freight Programs (formerly SCDOT's Division of Mass Transit) to ensure that the state's multimodal transportation objectives are addressed. The Division of Intermodal and Freight Programs was created by legislative statute June 7, 2010.
The Division created a new Office of Public Transit and Office of Railroads with responsibilities for planning, developing and coordinating a comprehensive intermodal transportation program for the movement of passengers and freight through integrated highway, railroad, port, airport, and other transit systems. Additional responsibilities include the development of a statewide public transit system, coordinating the preservation and revitalization of existing rail corridors, and development of a comprehensive state rail plan for passenger and freight railroads and rail infrastructure services.
