Remount and Aviation Interchange Improvements Project: I-26

South Carolina Department of Transportation’s (SCDOT) Remount and Aviation Interchange Improvements Project is a part the department’s continuing efforts to improve our state’s major transportation corridors.
This three-year, $66 million project will create the following improvements:

  • Reconstructed Aviation Avenue Interchange – The improved Aviation Avenue interchange will include a wider overpass and realigned ramps to improve traffic flow to and from I-26.

  • Reconstructed Remount Road Interchange – The improved Remount Road interchange will include a wider overpass, a new ramp onto I-26 Westbound and a new ramp from I-26 Eastbound.

  • Eight Traffic Lanes on Interstate 26 between I-526 and Ashley Phosphate Road- Most of the widening in this three mile stretch will occur by replacing the grass median and cable barrier between the east and westbound traffic with a concrete wall.

  • Realignment of Fain Street alongside I-26.

We welcome your questions or comments about the Remount and Aviation Interchange Improvements Project. Fill out the form below, and click the submit button.

Traffic Updates

Heavy equipment in the construction zone makes it dangerous for the general public. Please us the alternative routes and stay out of the construction zone.

Night-time lane closures will continue on both directions of I-26 between I-526 and Ashley Phosphate Road as crews focus on building new roadway in the median. These lane closures are subject to weather conditions. Lane closures will not be scheduled the last two weeks of December to reduce delays for holiday travelers.

While, two of the four ramps are now opened for the Remount and I-26 Interchange (the ramp from I-26 West onto Remount Road and the ramp from Remount Road onto I-26 East), Remount Road continues to be closed between Air Park Road and The Charleston Animal Society Public Entrance.

ACCESS FOR BUSINESSES AND ROUTES IMPACTED BY THE TEMPORARY REMOUNT ROAD CLOSURE BETWEEN THE CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY MAIN ENTRANCE AND AIR PARK ROAD.

Visitors to the Charleston Animal Society will be provided local access from the interstate side of Remount Road. Staff and deliveries for the Charleston Animal Society can continue to use Air Park Road from S. Aviation.

2460 Remount Road including DHL and Diamonds will be provided local access from S. Aviation Ave.

Drivers from the Airport and Charleston Air Force Base area who are accustomed to using Remount Road to access I-26 Eastbound or to access Rivers Avenue are being detoured to Aviation Avenue.

If you have questions or comments about this temporary road closure or its detour, please contact the I-26 Remount and Aviation Interchange Improvements Project Team at 843-572-5734 or leave a comment on our Contact Us page.

Safety

The speed limit on I-26, within the Remount and Aviation Interchange Improvements Project, has been reduced to 55 mph and 45 mph when there are lane closures.
