S.C. Safe Routes to School Funding

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant funding will be provided on a grant reimbursement basis through a competitive application process. The SCDOT SRTS Program has designed a competitive application to assess the need for Safe Routes to School programs at schools in South Carolina. The need is determined through evaluation of current student travel patterns, potential participation, physical and perceived barriers to SRTS, traffic issues, crash data, an exhibited existing interest in SRTS, and understanding of the comprehensive nature of SRTS.

Our goal is to fund as many schools as we can each year. Selected schools must be at least a bronze level partner of the SRTS Resource Center in order to even be considered for funding. Any school with grades K - 8, school district, municipality or other government entity may apply. Government agencies or organizations may apply on behalf of a school. An application for funding must represent only one eligible school. Eligible schools are any school with any grades K - 8 (traditionally elementary or middle schools). Eligible schools must have been in operation for at least two years prior to application deadline. Previous SRTS infrastructure awardees and schools built within the last two years are ineligible. Only one application per school per funding cycle is eligible.

NOTE: SCDOT will administer and oversee the infrastructure project and the SC SRTS Resource Center will oversee the non-infrastructure portion.

Plans typically include non-infrastructure and infrastructure projects and programs. Plans are submitted to SCDOT for review. Once all concerns are met, participation agreements are drafted and signed. Work may begin only after participation agreements are signed. Work must begin within 6 months of participation agreements signing and must be complete within 24 months of participation agreements signing.
