Are you up to the challenge of designing a bridge that can resist an earthquake?
This competition, open to undergraduate engineering students, will allow participants to design a hypothetical bridge to be constructed in Charleston, South Carolina as part of a new highway system. Each individual participant or team is tasked with designing a safe bridge, while using the least amount of material possible. Construction time will also be judged as a part of the competition. Participants are required to submit their design by March 17, 2008. Top qualified participants will be invited to attend the 6th National Seismic Conference where their design will be tested in an earthquake simulator.
The goal of this competition is to provide an environment for undergraduate engineering students to explore the effects of earthquakes on bridges. With this competition we hope to increase awareness of the catastrophic effect of earthquakes on bridges and the importance of earthquake design.
