RECYCLING IN HIGHWAY AND BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

SCDOT permits the use of various waste materials in highway construction, including recycled asphalt pavement, shingles, fly ash, recycled Portland cement concrete (base and concrete pavement), glass and other materials. The I-95 Project in Florence and Darlington Counties was a good example of the use of such waste products.  That project contributed significantly towards the award of a DHEC recycling award.

SCDOT also looks for ways to recycle all materials and is now partnering with Clemson University and DHEC on a process for using ground tires in asphalt pavements.  Another example of our use of waste material is the utilization of Chipped waste tires for erosion control.

Last year, SCDOT recycled more than 400 tons of metal; 107 tons of used motor oil; 51 tons of grass clippings, leaves and tree limbs; and, 113,000 tons of recycled asphalt pavement.
