RECYCLING EFFORTS

Recycling stations were established at the SCDOT Headquarters building in Columbia in 2001. These stations are located on each floor with an additional area for larger boxes on the loading dock at the rear of the building. Each recycling station has four bins for paper, plastic, aluminum and glass. There are on-going programs for recycling cardboard, wood pallets, rubber tires and fluorescent bulbs. In addition, SCDOT facilities have recently been charged with the task of recycling all concrete waste products (e.g. Culverts).  We’ve also been tasked with the elimination of oil absorbent material(s) used at SCDOT maintenance shops by utilizing laundered shop mats and shop rags.  Used motor oil, used batteries, aerosol cans and scrap metal are also part of the agency’s recycling program.  The SCDOT Maintenance Division is working on several aggressive strategies to reduce used motor oil and used antifreeze volumes.
