INVASIVE PLANTS
The SCDOT Maintenance Division is involved in the control of undesirable vegetation on the highway right-of-way. Examples are kudzu, bamboo and tropical soda apple. An SCDOT landscape architect works with the Maintenance Division to check landscaping plans to confirm that no invasive plants are proposed to be planted on the right-of-way. This includes SCDOT and non-SCDOT projects.
A “Roadside Plant to Avoid/Trees with Limitations on R/W” list can be found on the Landscaping Guidelines page of the SCDOT internet site. This web page also has a link to the South Carolina Forestry Commission Tree Care & Community Forestry section.
