Sustainability, convenience, esthetics, economics and safety are the essential elements that contribute toward our quality of life. Transportation must be an investment that fits into this big picture. Impacts to the human and natural environment must be minimized while promoting a healthy, enjoyable environment.
To accomplish this goal, SCDOT seeks win/win solutions that help drive South Carolina’s economy, creating jobs and providing convenience for citizens and tourists while protecting our environment and preserving historic sites for future generations. It requires that Transportation planning be carried out from a holistic point of view to achieve this balance.
“We owe it to our citizens to be good stewards of the environment. From recycling tons of steel and asphalt to using a more efficient traffic signal light, we need to employ innovative methods across the board to preserve and protect the treasured qualities of this wonderful state.”
- H.B. “Buck” Limehouse, SC Secretary of Transportation
Our vision is to have this way of thinking permeate every aspect of SCDOT’s daily operations. The agency is setting new standards in the area of environmental stewardship.
