The Youth Corps Program is a youth employment and training program established in partnership with local cities, towns, and Indian Tribes that offers summer work for individuals between the ages of 16 and 21. The program focuses on landscaping and beautification projects and includes basic life skills, education and training. The training is designed to enhance the youth’s skills in communication, leadership development, positive work ethics, and improve awareness of the environment. The program also provides the youth with an opportunity to develop citizenship values and skills through service to their communities and the State of South Carolina. A major goal of the program is to expose young people to career opportunities in transportation..
In 2008, the SCDOT and FHWA funded partnerships with 14 cities and towns employing approximately 97 high school and college students. Since the inception of the program in 1994, a total of 1,830 youth have participated in the program.
