The Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program was established nationally by Secretary of Transportation, Rodney Slater, to encourage students from kindergarten through adulthood to recognize the many opportunities for achievement and service in transportation. The objective of the program include establishing a Department of Transportation/Private Sector/Community Partnership to ensure today’s students are prepared to be tomorrow’s transportation workers; encompassing continuum from kindergarten through work life; and providing technology tools to ensure transportation skills.
The Garrett A. Morgan Partnership agreement was signed on April 7, 1998. The partnership agreement is between South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Felton Laboratory School, South Carolina State University (SCSU), and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
In an effort to ensure young people are introduced to the exciting careers in transportation, each year SCDOT and FHWA invites students from various schools, including Felton Laboratory School to participate in the Job Shadowing Day program. The students are given presentations on various aspects of transportation as well as tours of various offices within SCDOT.
