Summer Transportation Institute

The Summer Transportation Institute (STI) Program was established in 1993, as a partnership between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), and South Carolina State University (SCSU). The STI expanded in 1996 to include Benedict College; in 2005 to include Claflin University; and, in 2008 to include Denmark Technical College. The purpose of the STI is to create awareness and stimulate interest in secondary school students to take maximum advantage of the career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The goals of the Institute are to expose secondary school students to and participate in a series of academic experiences designed to motivate them toward professions in the transportation industry and to provide them with mathematics, science, and technological enrichment, which will enable them to pursue a career in transportation. The STI is a four-week program, which includes room and board on college campuses for 9th through 12th grade students. The national curriculum includes: academic, engineering, career speakers, field trips, and SAT preparation. The 2007 Statewide participation included: fifteen (15) students attending SCSU, thirteen (13) students attending Benedict College, and sixteen (16) students attending Claflin University. The program has expanded nationally to include forty-eight (48) participating colleges and universities in thirty (30) states.
