The design and construction of the Briggs-DeLaine-Pearson Connector will incorporate many features to minimize impacts to the environment. Every effort will be made to locate the project through areas that have little or no consequence to the area's wetlands and habitat. The project may impact isolated, non-contiguous wetlands; however, the SCDOT will coordinate with the Interagency groups to develop a mitigation plan acceptable by all parties involved. This plan could include preservation, creation, enhancement or a combination thereof in order to compensate any affected wetlands.
In addition, sensitive construction efforts will minimize the impact on the surrounding environment. Several of these could include:
- Construction and work will be limited to the width of the new right of way.
- Using an existing canal to construct the bridge to avoid dredging of the lake for construction barges.
- Top-to-bottom bridge construction practices will minimize impacts to wetlands and waterways.
- Aesthetics are of importance to design and landscaping, encompassing the thin lines of the structure and the planting of native grasses along the road corridor.
- Best Management Practices (BMP's) will minimize impacts and decrease potential for siltation.
