Construction and Maintenance
Bridge on Route SC 34 in Lee County to Be Replaced

Jan 27, 2006, 15:52

The South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to replace the bridge over Scape Ore Swamp on Route SC 34 (Camden Highway), in Lee County.

The bridge is in need of replacement due to its structural condition.  The Department receives a limited amount of federal funding each year to address the state’s bridge replacement and rehabilitation needs.  With approximately 1,900 substandard bridges statewide, the funds needed for bridge replacements greatly exceed the limited amount of funding that is available.  Many of our bridges are nearing the end of their useful life and are in need of repair or replacement in order to maintain a safe and efficient highway system.

Contractors are expected to bid on the replacement of the bridge this winter, with construction beginning a few months later.

Traffic will be maintained on the existing alignment during construction, and will be shifted downstream once construction is complete.  Since the bridge is presently load restricted, trucks will continue to be detoured along the designated route until construction is complete.  The Department anticipates that construction will last approximately 12 to 15 months, barring any unforeseen complications.

For more information, the public may contact Bridge Project Coordinator Michelle James or Assistant Bridge Design Engineer Terry Koon, at (803) 737-1420.
