The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 10, concerning the proposed replacement of bridges over the Great Pee Dee River, Pee Dee River Overflow and Yauhannah Lake along a two-mile stretch of US 701 in Georgetown and Horry counties.

SCDOT has determined that these three bridges are structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.

The hearing will be between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Yauhannah Community, Georgetown County.  The church is located at the US 701/Tabor Drive intersection, about three miles south of the bridge.

From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., an informal drop-in type format will be held.  The presentation and formal comment portion of the hearing will be held from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Citizens who would like to make public comments should sign up to speak no later than 6:55 p.m.  Each speaker will be allotted 2 minutes to speak and their time is not transferable to another person.

The new bridges will be constructed adjacent to the existing roadway alignment.  The new structures will provide two travel lanes, one in each direction of travel.  New bridge approach roadways and new connecting roadways between the bridges will also be constructed.

The Public Hearing will provide information concerning the proposed bridge replacement and solicit input from area residents.  Another purpose of the hearing will be to gather information from the public or any interested organization on historic or cultural resources in the area. Engineering and environmental personnel from SCDOT and its consultant will be available to discuss the project with interested citizens on an individual basis.

The environmental document, related maps and displays as well as other pertinent data will be available for public review fifteen days prior to the hearing at the SCDOT’s Central Office at 955 Park St., Columbia, and at SCDOT’s District office at 3018 E. Palmetto St., Florence.

For more information, the public may contact Assistant Program Manager W. “Tyke” Redfearn at (803) 737-1430 in Columbia.  Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations to attend the hearing should contact Karen Davis at (803) 737-1549.
