COLUMBIA, SC –The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), has agreed on a route for a possible Triathlon in Horry County.
Representatives from the SCDOT, Horry County Government and Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce met today to discuss details of the event. “After discussing the requirements for the triathlon, a route was approved which would be the least intrusive of all routes reviewed,” said SCDOT Commissioner Danny Isaac.
The tentative route for the bicycle portion begins at the Grande Dunes Marina and continues in the South bound lanes of highway 17 to Bob Grissom Parkway. The participants will bicycle on the north bound lanes of highway 31 to the SC 9 interchange and return the same route to the Marina.
Only the north bound lanes of SC31 will be closed for several hours on the weekend of October 30, 2010. “We were concerned about the daily commuter getting to their workplaces on time. With this triathlon being on the weekend, that will not be a problem. This turned out to be a partial lane closure and not a total closure of the road,” said Dennis Townsend, SCDOT District Administrator.
“This is great example of how we can all work together to get a beneficial result for the people of Horry County. SCDOT has always been a great partner with Horry County and we are extremely pleased with the result of today’s meeting,” said Horry County Chairwoman Liz Gilland. “Secretary Limehouse has proven that he is Horry County’s friend once again.”
